Your own pages disagree, and AI repeats it: run a consistency audit before AEO

Before you try to change what AI engines or other sites say about you, make sure your own pages agree with each other. When your homepage, FAQ, help center, and press releases state different prices, capabilities, or numbers, an answer can repeat either version. In lab studies, language models tend to favor the passage that answers the question most directly rather than the most authoritative one, and they rarely tell the reader that sources disagree. In most of the brands we analyzed in October 2026, at least two of the brand's own pages disagreed on a fact AI answers repeat. This guide covers why that happens, the contradictions we see most often, a 5-step audit, how to fix each type, and how to check that engines picked up the fix, as of Oct. 27, 2026.

Questions this guide answers

  • Why does AI give a different answer about my product than my homepage?
  • What happens when my website has conflicting information about the same fact?
  • How do I audit my website for inconsistent facts before doing AEO?
  • Which pages should I check for contradictions first?
  • Do old press releases and PDFs affect what AI says about my company?
  • How do I tell AI engines which version of a fact is current?

Direct answer

Fix your own pages first. If your homepage says a feature is on the free plan and your help center says it's paid-only, or your About page gives two different totals for the same customer result, an AI answer can repeat either one, and you can't predict which. Asking engines or third-party sites to change what they say is much harder while your own site argues with itself.

The audit is short: list the facts buyers ask about, pick 1 current value for each, find every page that states it (help center, old press releases, and PDFs included), fix or retire the outliers, date your pages honestly, and then rerun the same buyer questions across several runs to see whether the answers changed.

Why your own contradictions end up in AI answers

AI answers that use web search are assembled from the pages the engine retrieves. Google says its AI features rely "on our core Search ranking systems to retrieve relevant, up-to-date web pages from our Search index", so any indexed page of yours, old or new, is a candidate. Research on how language models handle conflicting passages explains why contradictions on one site are hard for them to resolve. None of the engine documentation we checked explains how an engine chooses between two conflicting pages from the same site, so these findings come from lab studies, not from any one engine.

  • Relevance beats polish. In an ACL 2024 study, models relied "heavily on the relevance of a website to the query, while largely ignoring stylistic features that humans find important". The FAQ or help-center line that answers the exact question can outweigh your homepage.
  • Same-site conflicts are the hard case. The WikiContradict benchmark looked at contradictions between passages that "originate from the same source and have equal trustworthiness" and found that models "struggle to generate answers that accurately reflect the conflicting nature of the context". With nothing to break the tie, a model tends to pick one version without saying there's a conflict.
  • Repetition tips the scale. Lab studies find models "leaning towards placing trust in evidence that appears more frequently" and showing confirmation bias toward what they already learned. An old figure repeated across old blog posts, a press release, and two PDFs can outvote the one page you corrected.
  • Old pages don't stop working when you publish a new one. A 2025 study found outdated information can mislead models "even when current information is available".
  • Subtle conflicts are the sticky ones. In one benchmark, models struggled to detect conflicts "especially when multi-hop reasoning is required" and often failed "to pinpoint the exact source of contradictions". We'd expect conflicts of scope (which plan, which program) and status (planned versus shipped) to be among the hardest to spot.
  • For a niche fact, you may be the only source. Google has described a "data void", where little high-quality content exists on a topic. A detail like a plan limit or a compatibility status may appear only on your pages, so your internal conflict can decide the answer.

The contradictions we see most often

In most of the brands we analyzed in October 2026 with Workspace Deep Analysis, at least two of the brand's own pages disagreed on a fact that AI answers repeat. The conflicts weren't exotic, and help centers and docs are where many of them hide, because support and product teams update them on a different schedule than marketing does. In some brands, the page an answer leaned on to describe the brand wasn't marketing copy at all; it was a help-center or docs page.

Anonymized, the conflicts looked like this.

TypeWhat it looked like
Plan entitlementA software company's product page says the free plan includes a feature; its help center says the feature is paid-only, and answers repeated the paid-only version.
Capability statusA technology company's homepage calls support for a widely used developer framework "planned", while its FAQ says it works today.
Same number, two valuesA subscription brand's homepage and FAQ give different counts for the same weekly menu.
Two totals on one pageA B2B company's About page states the same cumulative customer result twice, with different totals.
Performance claim driftA technology vendor's homepage and its own launch press release state different performance gains for the same product.
Credential scopeA services firm calls one offering accredited on one page; another page says only a related program holds the accreditation.
Category mislabelAn agency's industry portfolio page lists a project from an unrelated industry.

The consistency audit, step by step

Do it before outreach, content production, or any other AEO work, because every later step depends on knowing which value is current.

1. Inventory the facts buyers ask about

List the facts a buyer, analyst, or AI answer would need to describe and compare you. Most contradictions fall into a short list of fact types.

  • Prices and plans, including what each plan includes and what's free versus paid
  • Capabilities, integrations, and compatibility, with status: available, beta, planned, or retired
  • Numbers: customer counts, savings, performance gains, inventory or menu counts
  • Credentials: certifications, accreditations, and awards, and which offering holds each one
  • Dates: founding, launch, availability, end of life
  • Availability: regions, languages, service area, stock
  • Names and category: company, product, and legal entity names, and what you are

2. Pick 1 current value and an owner for each fact

Write each value down in one place, with the date it became true and the person who owns it. That is your single source of truth. Record retired values as retired, with the date, so the old value has an explicit end rather than a silent replacement.

3. Find every page that states it

Search for each current value and each old value. Use site: searches, a filetype:pdf search, and a search of your CMS or a crawl export for the old numbers. Check these places, because they drift on different schedules.

  • Homepage hero and meta description; product, feature, and pricing pages; FAQ
  • Help center, docs, and knowledge base, which often live on a separate subdomain
  • About and company pages; press releases and newsroom; launch blog posts; case studies
  • Landing pages, localized pages, and legal or terms pages
  • PDFs such as datasheets, one-pagers, price sheets, and press kits, which Google indexes
  • Structured data and meta tags, and facts shown only inside images

4. Classify each conflict

The fix depends on the type. A conflict is usually one of five: outdated (an old value next to a new one), scope (true for one plan, region, or product but stated generally), computation (two totals from different dates or methods), status (planned versus shipped), or a plain error (a typo or the wrong category).

5. Prioritize

Start with money and compatibility facts, and with the pages AI answers already cite. The citations show which of your pages the engines actually read, so a conflict on a cited page may already be costing you.

How to fix each type

Most fixes are ordinary site maintenance. The point is to leave one clearly current value everywhere an engine might look, without hiding anything from readers.

SituationFix
A living page with the wrong value (pricing, FAQ, help article)Update it in place, and state the current value in a plain sentence near the top.
A historical page that should stay (press release, launch post)Keep it, but add a dated note that it was superseded and link to the current page. In a September 2026 study, telling the larger models when old evidence stops applying worked far better than a date alone.
A retired plan, product, or page with a current equivalentUse a permanent redirect, which Google treats as a strong signal that the target should be canonical.
An obsolete page with no equivalentRemove it; Google drops URLs that return a 4xx status from its index over time. For an archived PDF you must keep, add an archived note in the document and noindex through the X-Robots-Tag header.
Near-duplicate pagesConsolidate them, and link internally to the canonical URL.
A scope conflictSay the scope out loud: "on paid plans", "in the U.S.", "for annual contracts". Then both pages stay true.
DatesShow a labeled "Published" or "Last updated" date that matches the page's structured data, remove stray dates, and keep sitemap lastmod honest. Don't change dates on pages you didn't substantially update: Google asks whether you're "changing the date of pages to make them seem fresh", and lab studies show models favor fresher-looking pages, so a falsely fresh old page can win.
Structured dataMake it say exactly what the visible text says; Google lists "making sure your structured data matches the visible text on the page" among its fundamentals. See schema markup for AI search.

Check whether engines picked up the fix

First, make sure crawlers saw the change; how to get AI engines to see your updates covers Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, and honest lastmod dates. Then rerun the same buyer questions on each engine you track and capture both the answer and the pages it cites.

Judge the change across several runs, not one, because each engine updates on its own schedule, and check whether untouched prompts on the same engine moved too. Watch the citations as well as the wording: if an answer still repeats the old value and cites an old press release or PDF, open that page and check it. It may not have been fixed, redirected, or annotated yet, or the engine may not have picked up the change. An answer can also cite an annotated historical page correctly. If the wrong value persists and the cited page isn't yours, the self-audit is done and the next step is fixing the third-party sources.

Keep it consistent

Make the fact inventory part of your release checklist. When a price, plan, or capability changes, update every page on the inventory the same day, including the help center, and bring support and docs owners into that checklist. Once a quarter, sweep old press releases and PDFs for values that have since changed.

How SolCrys helps

SolCrys runs this as the Measure → Diagnose → Execute → Verify loop. Workspace Deep Analysis reads the pages of yours that AI answers cite most, plus the pages your Corporate Context lists, and when two of them, or two passages on one page, state different facts, it shows the conflict under "What holds you back" with a verbatim quote from each and adds a Fact alignment task to Week 1 of the plan, because it fixes facts you control. It only sees those pages, so the manual audit above still matters for the rest of your site.

Corporate Context, your organization's source of truth shared across workspaces, holds the current value of each fact and the retired ones. Answer Accuracy, on the Pro plan and above, checks AI answers to selected brand questions against it and can't mark a claim wrong without quoting the evidence; when an answer repeats a value you've marked retired, it can be flagged as Outdated info. Your team approves every change, and SolCrys never publishes for you. Content Audit then checks each fixed page's date signals and freshness and whether its content is readable in the HTML, and the same prompts run again on the same engines so you can judge the change across several runs.

FAQ

Why does AI give a different answer about my product than my homepage?

It can be because another page of yours says something different. Answers that use web search are built from the pages an engine retrieves, and in lab studies models favor the passage that answers the question most directly, so a FAQ, help-center article, or old press release can outweigh your homepage. Check whether your own pages agree before looking elsewhere.

What happens when my website has conflicting information about the same fact?

An AI answer may repeat either version. In lab studies, models rarely tell the reader that sources disagree, and a value repeated on more pages, or one the model already learned, can outweigh a single corrected page.

Which pages should I check for contradictions first?

Pricing, plans, and compatibility facts first, then the pages AI answers already cite. After that, check the help center and docs, press releases, and PDFs, because they are updated on different schedules than your marketing pages.

Do old press releases and PDFs affect what AI says about my company?

They can. Google indexes PDFs, and research finds outdated pages can mislead models even when current information is available. Keep historical press releases, but add a dated note that the value was superseded and link to the current page; redirect or remove pages that no longer serve a purpose.

How do I tell AI engines which version of a fact is current?

Leave only one current value on pages you control, mark superseded pages with a dated note, redirect retired pages to their current equivalent, keep visible dates and structured data consistent and honest, and make sure crawlers see the change. Then rerun the same questions across several runs to confirm the answers moved.
