How to Build a Source-Layer Strategy for AEO (2026)
A strategic playbook for building the three source layers that AI engines actually cite: owned, earned, and community. Includes sequencing, costs, and an ethics line.

For corroboration failures, the work is on someone else's domain — which changes the timeline, the tactics, and the ethics.
If you are cited, accurate, and still not recommended, the missing ingredient is an independent source that says what you say. No amount of work on your own site produces that.
The targets are already in your data. Module 4 asked you to identify the source URLs that recur across the prompts you lose. Those are not abstract; they are the specific pages where being covered would change the answer.
Editorial coverage responds to being genuinely newsworthy or genuinely useful to that publication's audience — a real finding, a dataset, a point of view worth quoting. It is slow and it does not respond to volume.
Review and directory listings are the most mechanical option and often underrated, because they are structured, frequently recrawled, and explicitly comparative.
Community sources are the fastest-moving and the most dangerous to approach cynically. The only durable strategy is to be a useful participant. Astroturfing is detectable by humans and increasingly by platforms, and it converts a citation opportunity into a reputational liability.
Off-domain work has a longer lag than a page edit. Publication, then crawl, then incorporation into what engines draw on. If your change this cycle is off-domain, extend your re-measurement date accordingly rather than concluding it failed at two weeks.
That is a real cost, and it is why diagnosing correctly matters. Spending a slow cycle on corroboration when your actual problem was crawler access is an expensive mistake.
No quota consumed.
Do not attempt to manufacture community mentions. It is detectable, it is against most platform rules, and it damages the thing you are trying to build.
This lesson is the spine. These guides are the depth.

Earned media is the single most powerful AEO lever a brand has, because it's the corroboration layer AI trusts, but PR measurement wasn't built to see it. How comms teams measure whether a campaign, announcement, or media hit actually changed what AI says, with a clean before/after.
