Most AEO advice is untestable. This course teaches the opposite habit: treat every claim about AI answers as something you measure before and after. Seven modules take you from an empty workspace to a verified result — choosing the ten questions that matter, taking a baseline, separating the three reasons AI skips a brand, shipping one grounded change, and then deciding whether the number that moved is signal or noise. Every lesson is free to read without an account. Every lab runs inside the SolCrys free tier.
What you will be able to do
- Write a prompt set that represents real buyer decisions rather than keywords
- Take a defensible baseline and know how much to trust it
- Separate the three distinct reasons an answer engine skips a brand
- Turn one diagnosed gap into one shipped, grounded change
- Decide whether a movement in your numbers is a result or noise
Who it is for
- SEO and content leads whose organic traffic is being absorbed by AI answers
- Product marketers who need to know how AI describes their category
- Founders and growth operators doing AEO without a dedicated team
- Agency strategists building an AEO service line
What you need
- A free SolCrys account for the labs — no credit card. Reading requires nothing.
- One brand or product you can make a small content change to
- About three hours of reading, spread over at least two weeks because verification is slow by nature
What the free tier gives you, and how this course spends it
The free tier is deliberately small: 10 tracked prompts, 3 manual ChatGPT checks a month, 1 Deep Analysis, 1 Content Audit, 1 workspace, no credit card. That is not a lot — and that is the point. A real AEO experiment needs a baseline, a change, and a confirmation. Three runs is exactly enough to do that once, honestly, and not enough to fool yourself by re-rolling until you like the number.
| Module | What you do | Quota |
|---|---|---|
| Module 1 | Workspace + Corporate Context | No quota |
| Module 2 | 10 prompts, then Run 1 of 3 | Run 1/3 |
| Module 4 | Deep Analysis + Content Audit | 1 of 1 each |
| Module 5 | Ship one change | No quota |
| Module 6 | Run 2, then Run 3 | Runs 2/3 and 3/3 |
Quotas reset monthly, so Module 6 is designed to be done in the following month. That is not a workaround — it is how long a content change actually takes to propagate through answer engines.
Syllabus
01 — Orientation
What actually changed, and how to use this course without wasting your three runs.
- What actually changed about search — AI answer engines do not rank pages for a user to choose from. They read sources and produce one answer. That single structural difference is what makes AEO a different job from SEO. (8 min)
- How to use this course — The course spends a fixed, small budget of free-tier quota on one honest experiment. Here is the order, and the one mistake that wastes it. (5 min, includes a lab)
02 — Ground
Before you measure anything, write down what is true about your brand — in a form a machine can use.
- Why context comes before measurement — You cannot grade an AI answer as right or wrong without a written statement of what is true. Corporate Context is that statement, and it has to exist before the first run. (7 min)
- Writing your Corporate Context — A working structure for the document, and the test for whether each line earns its place. (10 min, includes a lab)
- Brand facts and the competitive set — Naming your real competitors is a measurement decision, not a marketing one — and getting it wrong quietly corrupts every comparison you make afterwards. (6 min, includes a lab)
03 — Measure
Ten questions, chosen well, and the first honest baseline.
- A prompt set is not a keyword list — Keywords are fragments people type. Prompts are decisions people are trying to make. Porting one into the other is the most common way teams get an AEO programme wrong from day one. (8 min)
- Choosing your ten prompts — A concrete allocation, the sourcing method, and the rule that keeps your baseline comparable to your follow-up. (9 min, includes a lab)
- Your first run: taking a baseline — What a run actually does, what the first set of numbers means, and the discipline of writing down your prediction before you look. (8 min, includes a lab)
04 — Read
Turning a wall of answers into a picture of who is shaping them.
- Reading presence without over-reading it — Presence, share of voice, and how a brand can be mentioned everywhere and recommended nowhere. (7 min, includes a lab)
- Reading the citations — The list of sources an engine cited is the most actionable artefact you have, because it names exactly which pages you would need to be on. (8 min, includes a lab)
- The source layer: owned, editorial, community — Different source types behave differently, respond to different work, and cannot substitute for each other. (8 min, includes a lab)
05 — Diagnose
Three distinct reasons an engine skips you — and why the fix for each is different.
- The three failure modes — Not retrieved, retrieved but not cited, cited but not recommended. Almost every AEO problem is one of these, and treating them as one problem is why most fixes fail. (9 min, includes a lab)
- Running a Deep Analysis — You have one on the free tier. Spend it on the prompt that matters most, not the one that annoys you most. (7 min, includes a lab)
- Auditing one page — The page-level view: whether a specific URL is answer-ready, and what recovering the lost points actually requires. (8 min, includes a lab)
- When presence is not the problem — Two failure states that a presence metric will never show you: the engine describes you wrongly, or describes you correctly and still picks someone else. (7 min)
06 — Act
One change, chosen to match your diagnosis, shipped in a way you can attribute later.
- Why you ship exactly one change — Shipping five changes at once feels productive and destroys your ability to learn anything from the result. (7 min, includes a lab)
- Fixing a page so an engine can use it — For retrieval and citation failures, what actually changes an outcome — and the shortcuts that produce nothing. (9 min, includes a lab)
- When the fix is off your own site — For corroboration failures, the work is on someone else's domain — which changes the timeline, the tactics, and the ethics. (8 min, includes a lab)
07 — Verify
The module that separates an AEO practice from a collection of opinions.
- Why one run proves nothing — Answer engines are non-deterministic. Understanding what that does to your evidence is the core skill this course exists to teach. (8 min)
- Your second run — Re-measure against a frozen prompt set, and read the per-prompt movement rather than the headline. (7 min, includes a lab)
- Signal or noise: the third run — The run most teams never take, and the only one that tells you whether the second one meant anything. (8 min, includes a lab)
- Turning this into an operating cadence — What the loop looks like when it runs every month, what to report, and what to stop doing. (8 min, includes a lab)
Questions about the course
Is this course really free?
Yes. Every lesson is readable in full without an account, without an email address, and without a paywall. The hands-on labs use the SolCrys free tier, which needs an account but no credit card. We built it this way on purpose: an execution platform that gates its own teaching material is arguing against itself.
Do I need to use SolCrys to take this course?
No. The concepts — prompt-set design, the three failure modes, the difference between citation and recommendation, run-to-run variance — apply to any AEO stack or to a spreadsheet and a lot of patience. The labs are written against SolCrys because that is the tool we can give you free access to and describe honestly. If you use something else, the labs become a specification you can implement there.
Is there a certificate?
Not yet. The first version of this course is deliberately just the material and the labs. If enough people finish it and tell us the credential would matter to them, we will add an assessment.
How long does it take?
About three hours of reading. But the course cannot be completed in three hours, because Module 6 requires you to wait for a content change to propagate through answer engines and then re-measure. Plan on two to four weeks of elapsed time. Any course that promises you a verified AEO result in an afternoon is teaching you to skip the verification.
Who is this not for?
If you want a list of tactics to apply without measuring them, this is the wrong course — the entire spine here is measurement discipline, and roughly half the material is about not fooling yourself. If you need enterprise-scale rollout across many brands and markets, start here anyway for the concepts, then talk to us about what changes at that scale.
